Maybe you are like me, in love with nature and green everywhere around. I can be for hours in the real forest, on the top of the mountain, at the field - as long as I’m outside and away from the city rush. But, maybe you are not like me. If you like being outside, close to the water with greenery around you, but at the same time have a camping weekend in civilization, Orahovica, one small town in Slavonia, offers exactly that.

Organize your camping weekend by Orahovica Lake, and you'll be amazed how great it is. A beautiful artificial lake with the coast made in the shape of stairs will give you an unusual experience. My advice would be to go there before the summer starts, as during very warm days, it can be very crowdy. But if you don’t mind being surrounded by a bunch of people, don’t avoid it even in July and August. You can place your tent near the lake and enjoy the wonderful dawns there. All around the lake is a field, and you can put your tent wherever you want. Be careful if you are coming during the spring, the nights by the lake can be a little bit cold. Also, everything you need when you are by the water, you can find in the proximity. And as I told you in the beginning, you are in civilization, on a halfway between Osijek and Virovitica. Around the town, also called 'The Town of Twins' as it has the most twins born there in the whole of Croatia, you can visit very old cultural heritage of this part of the country.

Orahovica monastery

Near the village Duzluk, you can visit Orthodox monastery of St. Nicola, from the 16th century. This is one of the oldest Orthodox monasteries in Croatia. The monastery was devastated during WWII and again during the war in 1991, but it is rebuilt, and today four monks are looking after it. The monastery is located in a small valley. When you come close through the narrow path, you can hear the sound of a small stream and feel particular peace and relaxation in the air.

Ružica town

Ružica town (Small rose town) is located outside Orahovica, near Duzluk. In the same time, it was a town, a castle and a forest, and none of that entirely. It isn’t entirely known how the town got its name. Duzluk in Turkish means 'a flower or wild rose', but during the centuries, there were few guessing why it has the name Ružica. It is the best preserved Middle Age town in Croatia. You can see the remains of an old Gothic church here. As with almost every old fortress, the town of Ružica is also connected to one legend. The legend tells a story about Lady Ružica who didn’t want to marry a French lord in order to keep the town free. She killed herself jumping from one tower. After she died, all around the castle wild roses were raised.
