Playa de los Muertos was voted the best beach in Spain in 2016, but let's say it is "only" one of the best. This magic spot, despite its dark name –"muertos" means "dead", the beach of the dead people, is a beautiful, peaceful, paradisiac location. Situated at the heart of a natural park in the province of Almería but away from the big cities, its clear waters and perfect sand are ideal for getting away, far from the madding crowd. So, let's see why Playa de los Muertos is one of the best beaches in Spain!

A beach at a natural park

Playa de los Muertos is located at the Natural Park of Cabo de Gata-Níjar, a beautiful park that combines impressive nature both inland and at sea. There are many species here that are protected. If you are lucky and like snorkelling, you can spot some at the beach. The waters are so clear that you can see perfectly around you.

Despite being a very popular location, it is not so crowded. Because the beach is at the foot of a cliff, you need to walk ten minutes, following a narrow and steep path (not great if you are going with children), carrying with you absolutely everything (because it is a specially protected area, there are not any services here). Do not forget food, drinks, and of course, the snorkel mask. After this, you get the reward of a one-kilometre beach, with amazing sand made of little stones - really comfortable, so you do not end up like a croquette when you leave!

A dark past

Playa de los Muertos is set in a place where the sea currents converge. This is why, in the past, many ships wrecked near here and the corpses were thrown by the sea at this beach. Hence, the name. Actually, many wrecked ships, even from Roman times, have been discovered on this shore. But do not worry, nowadays it is very calm. Except, if there is wind, do not go inside! Once you get in the water, you lose your foot immediately, and remember, there is no lifeguard, so you need to be careful. However, this is very rare in summer, therefore you can relax and chill out.

Being so far away from everybody has allowed this beach to be nudist. And non-nudist. You decide, but do not be shocked when you get there!

What to do nearby

After all the effort of getting to Playa de los Muertos, you can either stay here all day or visit the nearby beaches, which are almost as beautiful as this one. Also, you can rent a boat or a kayak and tour around them. Another trendy choice is to stop at the popular lighthouse of Mesa Roldán. Around, you will find corals and fossils. But above all these nice choices, do not miss Playa de los Muertos, one of the best beaches in Spain!
