Rafting was popular in Georgia even in the 60s and 70s of the previous century, but it became even more interesting and famous extreme sport for both Georgians and tourists in the latest years. From May until the end of September, you will commonly see extreme lovers on the inflatable boats who are enjoying rafting on the different rivers.
Six categories of rafting
Rafting tours are divided into six categories depending on the difficulty of the routes on different rivers.
The 1st category includes calm rivers, on which maneuvering is effortless. A good example of such kind of stream is the Mtkvari River, that is very calm and slow near the Mtskheta City. The second category includes slightly accelerated rivers. The White Aragvi River is a perfect example of it, especially during summertime. Fast rivers are classified in the 3rd category. They are characterized by the holes, which makes rafting process more challenging. Rivers Aragvi, Mtkvari and Rioni are quite fast in spring. The fourth category includes fast and strong streams with more holes. In this category, you can find rivers such as the Tskhenistkali River and the Rioni River. If you go rafting in the 4th category, you can bravely consider yourself to be a master in rafting.
In the 5th and 6th category, here we have rivers with extremely fast streams and many dangerous obstacles. Rafting in these categories is very risky and not safe. However, if you are a real extreme-lover and risk-taker, then you can raft on the fastest rivers in Georgia including Enguri, Tergi and Rioni rivers.
A process of rafting
During each tour, the participants cover from 7 to 15 km of distance. A professional instructor sits on each boat, giving the instructions during rafting, so don’t worry if you are a beginner and enjoy. Make unforgettable memories with your friends while rafting. This extreme sport can give you great pleasure.
There are several rafting camps in Georgia near the village Pasanauri. After finishing the tour on the river, a van takes participants back to the rafting camp. They can continue having fun or just relax in the camp. In addition, participants can taste delicious Georgian dishes and have a great time after rafting. There is a National Rafting Federation in Georgia as well, that organizes different competitions.
Last year, Georgia hosted European Championship in rafting. It was an exciting and enjoyable event that took place on the Mtkvari River, in Borjomi Gorge. About 44 groups from 11 different countries participated in this competition, including Georgia, Romania, Czech Republic, Italy, Turkey, Denmark, the Great Britain, etc.
Georgia is a fascinating and attractive country for extreme-lovers. Every year, all rafting camps are ready to host the guests from all over the world. They are happy to see all kinds of rafters, so it does not matter whether you are a beginner or professional, you can plan your rafting tour in Georgia!
