The most romantic and best-known place in Italy is Verona, which recalls the masterful tragedy written by William Shakespeare, with the tragic love between Romeo and Juliet. And immediately after that is Venice, with its extraordinary lagoon landscape that seems almost fairytale-like, the "calli" that offer marvellous glimpses for the eyes, the gondolas and gondoliers, and their serenades. However, today we are searching for alternative romantic getaways for Valentine's Day in Italy, from north to south.

If you are bored of celebrating your Valentine's Day with boxes of chocolates, bouquets of red roses and candlelit dinners, nice and romantic but rather obvious things, by choosing one of these romantic getaways, you will amaze your partner and celebrate an unforgettable Valentine's Day in Italy!

Riomaggiore – Cinque Terre

The Cinque Terre are part of the UNESCO landscape heritage and are magnificent. But Riomaggiore is the most romantic because the Via dell'Amore begins here, a pedestrian street overlooking the sea that connects this small village to Manarola. This road is under continuous maintenance due to the various landslides that have occurred over time, but it is worth walking every time in the part that remains open. Your heart will be completely conquered by the bright colours of the fishermen's houses and the magnificent panorama on the horizon.

The Walk of Kisses

The Walk of Kisses is one of Italy's most fascinating and romantic natural paths. Visitors can discover the beauties of Liguria, following a path rich in history and landscape views. The Walk of Kisses is a particularly romantic route, which starts from Rapallo and continues up to Portofino, a dream route capable of offering postcard panoramic views and romantic scenarios. Following the long route is particularly simple. All you have to do is stay on the very long red carpet.

The initial part of the Walk of Kisses is in Rapallo, near the Lungomare, in front of the Castle, built in 1500, which certainly deserves a stop, even before leaving. Passing through the port of Rapallo and continuing the journey, we find San Michele di Pagana. This bay is part of the Portofino Marine Protected Area. The route continues, leading the adventurers to Santa Margherita Ligure. Once you have passed the town, you will be able to observe the world in all its splendour, thanks to the large pedestrian terrace created. Glimpses of the sea accompany wayfarers to Paraggi Bay, where you can continue towards the woods. For a while, you will be sheltered from the sun, even if the sea is never completely lost in sight, up to the village of Portofino, where this splendid natural red carpet ends in the centre of the main square.

The Gradara Castle

This ancient castle is located on the top of a hill in the province of Pesaro and Urbino in the Marche region. It is definitely one of the places to take the most instagrammable and romantic selfies due to the literary reference to love contained in Dante's Divine Comedy. In fact, it is precisely in this castle that Dante recounts the troubled love between Paolo and Francesca. Really exciting!

“Convict was the book and who wrote it” … the story of Guinevere and Lancelot, a reading that the two lovers shared within the walls of the Gradara Castle. Who knows, maybe even the singles among our readers will one day find themselves in the medieval village of Gradara leafing through a book and, raising their heads, they will meet great love!

Città della Pieve

Città della Pieve is an iconic village in the province of Perugia, in central Italy. Vicolo Baciadonne in Città della Pieve is one of the most romantic streets in Italy. It is said that this alley was born in the Middle Ages, following a dispute between two neighbours, who decided to detach their houses, thus leaving an alley just 50-70 centimetres wide. The alley is, in fact, so narrow that it forces two passersby who find themselves passing through the alley in the opposite direction to kiss due to the proximity of the lips. A walk through the alleys of Città della Pieve, the path along the perimeter of the ancient walls and the Vicolo Baciadonne are destinations for lovers from all over the world who choose a holiday of love between nature, history, food and wine.

Terni

Few know it, but Terni, in Umbria, is the homeland of San Valentino, the patron saint of lovers, revered and celebrated all over the world. Here the saint was born, where he became a bishop at the age of just 21, and here his remains are kept, right in the Basilica of San Valentino, on the outskirts of the city. It is a simple Baroque-style church, dating back to the 18th century, but behind the central altar, you can go down to the crypt where we find the original chapel, built in the 4th century on the tomb of the martyr, which was found in an early Christian necropolis. San Valentino is also the patron saint of Terni, and the Municipality, to celebrate the anniversary, organizes about a month of events every year around 14th February (concerts, exhibitions, cultural events, literary prizes, food and wine tastings, etc.).

The Feast of the Promise takes place on the Sunday following Valentine's Day, right in the Basilica of the saint, and hosts hundreds of engaged couples and future spouses ready to exchange the promise of eternal love. But there are also many married couples who go to the Basilica that day to celebrate the milestone of 25 or even 50 years of marriage and renew the commitment of their union.
