Segovia is one of the most beautiful cities that I have visited so far in Spain. It is only 1 hour away from Madrid, and like Toledo, it is easily accessible by public transport! It is offered as an ideal day trip, starting from Madrid or any surrounding cities.
Sightseeing in Segovia
The Roman aqueduct
Segovia overflows with culture and history, to the point that a monumental Roman aqueduct actually runs through the middle of the city. This is the most famous and most photographed landmark. In fact, it is among the most well-preserved Roman aqueducts in Europe. It was built during the second half of the 1st century A.D. under the rule of the Roman Empire in order to supply the city with water brought from the river Acebeda. Nowadays, it is one of the most visited sights in Segovia, and it still stands remarkably intact.

The Alcázar fortress-palace is intertwined with Spain’s medieval royalty and definitely needs to be explored further upon visiting. It was the home of kings and queens, and thanks to its storybook towers, it is often listed among the most beautiful castles in Spain. It was built on top of a rock, which can be considered a testament to its original military status. Built approximately in the 12th century, the castle took its name after the Arabic "al-qasr" which translates to "fortress". There are also many high medieval romanesque churches dotted around the city, along with opulent Renaissance palaces, all atop a rock stranded by two steep river valleys.

Segovia's most famous mansion is probably the "Casa de los Picos". Built at the end of the 15th century, by the councilor Juan de la Hoz, it can be found in the historic center of the city. The mansion's most characteristic feature is undoubtedly its façade, which is covered entirely by granite blocks carved into pyramid-shaped reliefs. There are plenty of legends claiming that under one of those peaks, there is a hidden treasure. Unfortunately, there are approximately 360 peaks, so who can tell?! Currently, it houses the Segovia Art School, and it is also used as an exhibition hall.

Segovia is a city busting with culture and interesting things to do and see. While there, you should not miss out on visiting Segovia's Cathedral and admire its unique Gothic-style architecture! Do not forget to go to the Mirador de la Pradera de San Marcos and enjoy the view over the Alcazar towering fortress. Last but not least, if you are into gastronomy, then a visit to the Gastronomical Museum of Segovia is definitely a must, as you will be given an insight into the area's cuisine through interactive panels and audiovisual tools hosted in the museum's permanent exhibition.
