Slalom, snowboarding, or long-distance skiing - Sweden has resorts for all kinds of winter sports. Here are four of the best ski resorts to visit in Sweden.

The Swedish mountains might not be as famous as the ski resorts in the European Alps, but they are still well worth a visit. There are plenty of resorts to visit, from Riksgränsen in the north to the more southern ski resort of Sälen.

1) Riksgränsen

Sweden’s most northern ski resort, Riksgränsen, is situated on the border between Norway and Sweden. It is located close to the well-known village of Abisko and 18 hours by train from Stockholm. The ski resort is especially known for its amazing off-piste sections, but also has plenty of attended pistes. If you are visiting in May, be sure to attend the spectacular Scandinavian Big Mountain Championships event. Visit Riksgränsen and explore one of Sweden’s best ski resorts in the scenic Sub-Arctic landscape.

2) Åre

It is no wonder that Åre is the most known and popular ski resort in Sweden. With its 42 ski lifts and 89 slopes, Åre is the largest ski resort in Scandinavia. Åre is a traditional northern Swedish mountain village that still offers high-quality and trendy hotels, restaurants and coffee shops.

The ski resort is divided into three different areas: Åre Björnen (which is very suitable for families and kids), the Duved area, and the Tegelfjäll area. They are all connected via ski buses. The resort itself is situated close to the airports of Östersund in Sweden and Trondheim in Norway.

3) Sälen

Sälen is located in the middle of Sweden and thus is more accessible to travellers arriving from Stockholm or Malmö. The area of Lindvallen is the most well-known part of the ski resort Sälen. All in all, there are around 100 different slopes and 90 lifts in Sälen. The ski resort of Sälen is also located close to the start of the 'world-famous long-distance ski race Vasaloppet' and thus is visited by long-distance enthusiasts as well as professional athletes.

4) Vemdalen

Located in-between Åre and Sälen lies the ski resort of Vemdalen. The resort is constituted by three different ski areas: Vemdalsskalet, Klövsjö/Storhogna, and Björnrike. While Björnrike is more kid-friendly, the ski areas, Klövsjö/Storhogna, offers several challenges for the advanced skiers and snowboarders. The resort is modern and comfortable with several options for accommodation and food.
