Temple of Apollo, Portara: The Jewel of Naxos

The Naxos Temple of Apollo – Portara is a massive marble doorway that stands as the emblem and main landmark of the island. This temple is an unfinished work of art that dates back to 530 BC and is considered a wonder of ancient Greece. This massive gate is the single remaining part of the temple of Apollo, and it comprises four marble parts, each weighing around 20 tons.  

The temple's construction was initiated by the tyrant Lygdamis in the 6th century BC, according to the specifications of the temples of Olympic Zeus in Athens and of the goddess Hera on Samos. Its monumental gate leads from the vestibule to the main part of the temple amidst the traces of its foundations and the ruins of a peripheral arcade that was never completed. The islet of Palatia, where the temple stands, is considered the place where Dionysian festivities were first held, as it is associated with the worship of Ariadne, a Cretan princess, and Dionysus, the god of wine and merriment.

The Legend of Ariadne and Theseus

The islet of Palatia holds a special place in Greek mythology, as it is believed that this was where Ariadne, the Minoan princess, was abandoned by her lover Theseus after he killed the Minotaur on the island of Crete. According to the legend, Theseus, along with a group of Athenians, was sent to Crete as a sacrifice to the Minotaur, a half-man and half-bull creature. The Minotaur was kept in a labyrinth, and Theseus managed to kill the beast with the help of Ariadne, who gave him a sword and a ball of thread to find his way back out of the maze. In gratitude, Theseus promised to take Ariadne with him to Athens and make her his wife. However, during the voyage back to Athens, Theseus abandoned Ariadne on the islet of Palatia, where she was found and rescued by Dionysus, who later made her his wife.
