"Pizza, Pasta, Vino, Gelato"…. the great passion for delicious food and drinks is undoubtedly part of the Italians' cultural identity. One of the most famous and most typical Italian delicacies worldwide is definitely the Italian Pizza. The base of the dish is simple but yet (when properly cooked) very flavorful and tasty.
The Neapolitan pizza is a synonym for achieving exactly the perfect base and the delicious taste, that a real Italian Pizza should have.
Apulia is an area full of good restaurants and pizza places and therefore, it is easy to find a good meal while in the south-eastern Italian region. To be upfront, I never had a bad pizza here, but as a real pizza lover, I'd say two places stood out particularly for me: one located in the middle of the region and one in the south.
The Pizzeria is not far from the lovely and historic port town of Trani. You should definitely combine dinner at Pulcinella with a day exploring the little town which is still off-the-tourist-trail. The Pizzeria is located in the middle of a busy street but has a huge garden, so none of the outside noises are in fact noticeable. The place itself brings to mind Napoli, the interiors are simple and the restaurant is a big open space divided into 4 areas, one of which is open-air. The service is quick, helpful and friendly but the most important reason why you should visit, is obviously its Pizza. They offer a great variety of different Pizzas, while all their tasty creations are made in a big open stone oven. Also, their antipasti selection is delicious and inspired by a Neapolitan menu card.
Did you know that there is an "official identification" for places that make real Neapolitan Pizza? It is called “Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana”. It has regulations that should be followed, from the ingredients to the preparation of the pizza dough; Checco Pizza meets them all. It is always busy with locals, since the small pizzeria is located only 10 walking minutes outside the historical center of Lecce.
