The Bled Castle - the oldest Slovenian citadel with a magnificent view

There is an old medieval castle standing above one of the most beautiful and unique places in Slovenia, called the Bled Castle. This fortification is considered as the oldest citadel in Slovenia and offers one of the most beautiful views of the magnificent Lake Bled with the island of wishes in the middle of it.

The Bled Castle was first mentioned early in the 11th century and has been built gradually and in different historical periods. That means that the citadel includes features of Romanesque architecture, as well as the signs of typical Medieval and Renaissance architecture. Although the fortification has a long history with different owners, the original builders of the Bled Castle never resided there, which resulted in the fort not having luxurious halls. In the beginning, the Bled Castle as we know it today consisted of only one tower, which was primarily used for defence purposes. More towers were built in the Middle Ages, and a true image of the citadel just started to form when a big part of it was destroyed in the 16th century. But no worries, the castle was rebuilt and restored, becoming magnificent as it still is today.
