The deepest lake in Slovenia: Lake Velenje

One of the main attractions in the fifth largest city in Slovenia – Velenje, is undoubtedly its largest lake, named after the city itself. Located in the middle of two other lakes – Škale and Šoštanj, Lake Velenje is known as the deepest lake in Slovenia with its 54-meter depth.

Even though all of the three lakes are a result of mining in the Šalek Valley, the unusual formation of them didn’t reduce the interest in Lake Velenje, as a result of which people from all over Slovenia and even other countries in Europe come to Velenje to enjoy a relaxing day in nature.

You can swim or just lie down in the sun right by the lake at the Velenje Beach, and for those who wish to stay a little bit longer, there is a camping site not so far away. The entry to the beach is free, and it is equipped with the showers and the beach bar MiaMia, where you can have a refreshing drink or a quick snack. If you enjoy sports activities, you can also practice surfing, sailing, playing volleyball and football or you can have a match of tennis or mini golf nearby.

Waterpark

The inflatable waterpark on the lake is available only in the summer season and is free for the visitors of the Velenje Beach. It is perfect for everyone to have a bit of fun and to enrich their experience here.

There are many festivals, concerts and other events being organised throughout the summer at the Velenje Beach, where everyone can find something fun and interesting to do.

One of the largest and most known is its annual event called “Pljusk”, which is organised around the end of June and represents the ending of the school year and the opening of the beach for the summer season. There, people can enjoy good music and watch extreme athletes jumping into the water with their bikes or competing in other fun activities.

If you are not a fan of bigger crowds and just wish to have a bit of peace, you can always go for a lovely stroll around one of the lakes and observe the swans that often gather in the nearby or the horses that are being trained in a facility not far away.
