When I was a child, I used to visit Minsk very often. The first place where I always wanted to go was Gorky Park. I loved being in nature, where I could enjoy different attractions. In this article, I am going to tell you about  Gorky Park, the oldest park in Minsk, that makes this city even more attractive.

The construction and opening of the park

The park was constructed in 1800, and at the beginning, it was called ‘The Park of the City.’ It was built on the banks of the River Svislach. The main part of the park is located on the right bank of this river. The grand opening of the park was held on 1st of May, 1805, as described in the records of Wojciech Skibiński, a Polish film actor. He wrote that it was a big and beautiful ceremony, and the whole city celebrated this day. People wore special uniforms such as frac for men and white dresses for women. This day finished with a great festival, and the whole city enjoyed it.

History

At the end of the 19th century, a new stage of park development began. They constructed a summer theater in the center of the park. In 1910, different cultural events were held in the park. In 1912, a beautiful flower garden was added, and they also planted different trees. Later on, they renamed the park, and only in 1936 it got the final name ‘Gorky Park.’ The park is named after Maksim Gorky, a famous Russian writer in the Soviet time. The main entrance of the park was built according to the design of the architect G. Zaborski, and it is considered as a historical-cultural heritage.

Gorky Park today

The park has a central location, and it is situated nearby Victory Square. It also includes an amusement park, that unites different attractions such as Ferris Wheel. Visitors can see an educational observatory with a planetarium and different trees that are more than 100 years old. Gorky Park is one of the best places for relaxing and having fun, and it receives many visitors, especially in spring and summer. It also offers different entertainment events and boat trips on the River Svislach. It is a favorite place of children, as they can enjoy the amusement park, rent bikes and play tennis, football and volleyball.
