Rijeka might be Croatia's (and former Yugoslavia's) most popular city. The meeting place of the sea and land, people from the inland and coastal regions, the meeting place of friends and lovers. Rijeka always stays in the heart of everyone who visits it. This port city is famous in many ways, especially for its torpedo factoryRijeka is a city of live music, smiling people and ideal geographic position - close enough to continental Croatia, yet at the door of the Adriatic Sea. I can write and speak about hip town for days, but today we will explore Trstat, Rijeka's greenest and most beautiful neighborhood with the best views. Let's see why Trsat and its Castle are faithful guardians of Rijeka for many years.

Trsat, the greenest of Rijeka

Trsat is a part of Rijeka which is adorned with the old castle of Trsat. Not only that it offers the most beautiful views of Rijeka and the Bay of Kvarner, but it also has a great historical significance. The castle of Trsat has been protecting the city from external attacks for centuries. It was founded in the 13th century atop the ancient Roman fort foundations. So, even the Romans took advantage of this position. In addition to the fortress, Trsat also has a new university campus and a park with lots of greenery.

You can reach Trsat from the city by car and bus, or if you are a bit more adventurous, you can take the stairs. They were specially made for pilgrims who wanted to visit the famous Church of Our Lady of Trsat but can be used by all visitors. There are exactly 561 of these steps, and they start in the very center of Rijeka, near the Rječina River. It takes about 15 minutes to reach the last step when you arrive at the 16th-century church and convent at the top. These steps are also known as the Stairs of Petar Kružić.

Trsat Castle

Trsat Castle adorns Trsat, which is one of the most visited destinations in Rijeka. Beautiful views of the sea and the city, peace, tranquility, and nature - an excellent combination that awaits you there. The castle of Trsat has been here for 8 centuries, and as in many other parts of Croatia, several different kingdoms and empires have ruled over this region. You can learn more from the guide and the exhibition itself in the castle. The castle is made of stone and is in very good condition today, although it has been so many years since it was built. Trsat and its castle survived many wars and battles between the great monarchies and even survived the earthquake, but luckily, they are still there for us.
