The Swedish capital, Stockholm, is a very popular destination for both an extended vacation and a weekend away. People visit it because of its food, design, outdoor clubbing, architecture, and beautiful nature.

Renowned for its beauty, Stockholm is situated where the Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic Sea. The city’s different neighborhoods all vary in style and atmosphere, with an architecture that is a mix of urban innovate design and buildings from the medieval times. Stockholm’s central neighborhood has something for everyone – from the luxurious hotels and high end-fashion boutiques at Östermalm, to the hipster and trendy Södermalm, locally called SoFo. Stockholm is famous for its historical landmarks. One of these is the Royal Palace that has a stunning view of the Baltic Sea and the Stockholm Archipelago.

Culture scenes and nightlife

Stockholm has a dynamic scene for art, theatre, and opera. Visit Dramaten, the crown of the Swedish theatre scene, or the well-known museum for modern photography called Fotografiska. The city also has an extensive range of bars and clubs. One of the most famous clubs is Trädgården (the Garden). Situated under a huge bridge in Södermalm, this club attracts the arty, the celebrities and the hipsters alike. Come early to avoid the queues and entrance fee.

Why foodies love Stockholm

If you have an interest in food, Stockholm is definitely a place to visit. There are several fine dining restaurants all over town, as well as vegan restaurants and burger bars. Franzén is the first Swedish restaurant to have three Michelin stars and is, therefore, one of Stockholm’s most famous places to dine.

People in Stockholm love to eat and drink local products. That’s maybe why the Stockholm based coffee roaster Johan & Nyström has been so successful. Visit their original coffee house, and you’ll definitely understand the concept that all Swedes keep talking about – the fika.

When to visit?

The city lives up during summer when the days are long and the nights are short. This is also the time of year when most tourist journey to Stockholm. The weekends during summer are always packed with activities and events. A lot of them are free, like the open-air cinema. There are often several pop-up markets focusing on either food or second-hand clothes. Kids love to experience Junibacken, a fun park created in tribute to the writer Astrid Lindgren.

But even though Stockholm is a fantastic summer city, it is still a great place to visit during any season of the year. Whether you’ll be drinking cocktails at a rooftop bar in August or experience some great art shows during January – Stockholm will sure keep you entertained.
