Discover the Fascinating World of Louis Braille at Musée Louis Braille in Coupvray

If you're looking for a unique and inspiring destination near Paris, look no further than Coupvray, a charming village that is home to the Musée Louis Braille. This museum, located in the birthplace of Louis Braille, the inventor of the universal script for the blind, offers visitors a captivating journey into the life and work of this remarkable individual.

A Historical Gem

The Musée Louis Braille is housed in a historic Briard house that has been transformed into a museum since 1956. This beautifully preserved building, classified as a Monument Historique, retains its authentic charm and serves as a testament to the legacy of Louis Braille. The municipality of Coupvray, in collaboration with the World Blind Union and the French Louis Braille Committee, manages the museum.

Explore the Senses in the Garden

One of the highlights of the Musée Louis Braille is its "Jardin des Cinq Sens" (Garden of the Five Senses). This sensory garden invites visitors to explore their senses through a pergola that forms a tunnel representing the night, symbolizing the loss of sight. As you walk through the tunnel, your senses will be stimulated by different elements, such as fragrant plants, edible herbs, tactile surfaces, and visually appealing landscapes. The sound of flowing water and rustling leaves adds an auditory dimension to the experience. The garden was designed by the technical services of Coupvray and features over 150 varieties of plants, thanks to the support of the Givaudan Foundation.

Step into Louis Braille's World

Inside the museum, you can step into Louis Braille's world and learn about his life and inventions. The common room, a typical Briard living space, is dedicated to the inventions related to Braille writing. Here, you can find the first Braille tablets, a Braille typewriter, and a raphigraphe, among other fascinating artifacts. Visitors are even given the opportunity to try their hand at writing in Braille using a tablet and stylus.
