Discover the Historic Charm of Palazzo Sipari in Alvito

Nestled in the picturesque city of Alvito, in the province of Frosinone, Palazzo Sipari stands as a testament to the rich history and architectural beauty of the region. Built in the mid-nineteenth century, this historic building is named after the Sipari family, who hailed from Pescasseroli, on the opposite side of the Alvitana mountain range.

A Sheep Transhumance Legacy

During the 1800s, the Sipari family owned the largest flock of transhumant sheep in the Kingdom of Naples. This impressive feat highlights their prominence in the local armentaria bourgeoisie. The construction of Palazzo Sipari in 1858 was closely tied to the wedding of Carmelo Sipari and Cristina Cappelli, bringing together two influential families from different backgrounds.

A Philosopher's Connection

Palazzo Sipari holds a special place in history as it is believed that Benedetto Croce, the renowned Italian philosopher, spent the first months of his life here in 1866. Benedetto Croce was the son of Luisa Sipari, Carmelo's sister. The philosopher returned to the palazzo several times, with one notable visit in 1925. Today, some of his papers are preserved in the historical archives housed within the building.

Architectural Marvels

Palazzo Sipari is a five-story building, with two basement levels. Its exterior facade showcases a rectangular shape along Corso Gallio, Alvito's main street. However, as you move towards the eastern side, the building transforms into a square shape, forming an "L" and enclosing a partially visible courtyard. The ground floor features tamponed windows and two grand doorways adorned with metopes and balconies. The upper floors are coated in a pink plaster finish, cleverly designed to resemble faux bricks.

Inside, the ceilings boast beautiful frescoes, some painted directly on the plaster, while others are adorned with delicate paper artwork. The main staircase and balconies on the facade are crafted from Trani marble, adding a touch of elegance to the overall design. Each of the five floors served a specific purpose, ranging from agricultural activities and storage in the basement levels to reception areas, bedrooms, and grand ballrooms on the upper floors.

Exploring Alvito and Beyond

While visiting Palazzo Sipari, take the opportunity to explore the charming city of Alvito. Stroll along Corso Gallio, where you'll find the main entrance to the palazzo, as well as the nearby Palazzo Graziani. Alvito is known for its well-preserved medieval architecture, including the impressive Church of San Simeone Profeta and the historic Porta Jacobelli.

For nature enthusiasts, the Alvitana mountain range offers breathtaking hiking trails and panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Don't miss the chance to visit the nearby Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo, the oldest national park in Italy, which was founded by Erminio Sipari, the son of Carmelo and Cristina, in 1922.
