Located in the heart of the Old Quarter, with its main doorway facing the Plaza del Mercado and two side doorways facing the streets Caballerías and Portales, La Redonda is surely one of the best known images of our city.

The first records of this church date back to the end of the 12th century. It seems to have been a Romanesque temple with a polygonal or circular floor plan, of which today only the nickname by which it is known remains: La Redonda.

In 1453 it obtained the status of collegiate church, when it merged with that of San Martín de Albelda, which led to a more extensive rebuilding. It was rebuilt in the 16th century and subsequently underwent a large number of transformations.

It was declared Insigne by Pope Benedict XIII according to a bull in 1727. In 1959 it was promoted to the status of Co-cathedral.© iStock / Faina Gurevich
