Puente Ajuda was constructed between 1520 and 1521 during the reign of King D. Manuel I of Portugal. It was built to connect the left bank of the Guadiana River, in the parish of Senhora da Ajuda, with the town of Olivenza. Throughout its existence, Puente Ajuda has faced numerous challenges. It suffered significant damage during the floods of 1597 and was partially destroyed by Spanish forces in 1657. The bridge was rebuilt in the same century but met its final destruction in 1709 during the War of the Spanish Succession.

Architectural Features

Despite its ruined state, Puente Ajuda still showcases its architectural grandeur. The bridge was an impressive 453 meters long and 5 meters wide, with a platform that reached a height of 161 meters above the river. It consisted of eight arches along the right margin and five along the left, supported by talhamares, which are stone buttresses.

The archivolts, adorned with two rows of staves, were supported by quadrangular pillars reinforced by high talhamares. Along the main platform, you can still see the remnants of an old tower erected over large boulders, adding to the bridge's mystique.
