The theater "Carlo Goldoni", built in 1622 by the wealthy family Vendramin, is the oldest theater in Venice that still exists today.

In 1753 the Vendramin hired the famous playwright Carlo Goldoni, with whom they entered into a special contract due to the great trust on Goldoni's ability to compose works of successful and highly appealing. Also by virtue of this cultural and social attitude, Carlo Goldoni could undertake that reform of the theater which led him to create works and immortal characters, that always resonate in stages all over the world and in many languages.

Once Goldoni party, the activities of the Theatre of the Vendramin proceeded with a medium level, until the fall of the Serenissima Republic in 1797, during the brief Austrian domination was closed and was reopened only in 1815. Since the second half of the nineteenth century management passed into the capable hands of Regina De Marchi, who in 1875 took the initiative to name the ancient theater of Carlo Goldoni.

In the following decades the most important Italian and foreign companies trod the stage of the Teatro Goldoni in Venice, even after the Great War the theater continued to be among the most important cultural centers of the lagoon city, hosting on its stage actresses of the caliber of Eleonora Duse.

The activity continued even during the Second World War, but after the war was declared unfit for use and was closed. In the twenty years following the Venice City Council took care of the final restoration, until, in 1992, was founded the Teatro Stabile del Veneto which was handed over the management of the Teatro Goldoni.
