The Cathedral of the Saviour of Albarracín is a Christian temple located in the town of Albarracín, province of Teruel, Spain. The cathedral stands on the remains of an ancient Romanesque temple built at the end of the 12th century.
The present building was begun in 1572 by the architects Martín de Castañeda and the French architect Quinto Pierres Vedel. The first bishop of the diocese of Albarracín (independent of Segorbe) was Martín de Salvatierra (1578-1583).
The building is located in the centre of the town, whose hamlet stands out powerfully. The difficult orography of Albarracín, located on an elevation surrounded by the gorge of the river Guadalaviar, influences the configuration of the building, whose ground plan is organised into a single nave with side chapels, a large, slightly higher main chapel with a polygonal apse, a choir at the base, and a cloister and other outbuildings around it. © iStock / Bet_Noire
