Castillo Doña Berenguela Ayuntamiento de Bolaños

With the Arab invasion, which began in the peninsula around the year 711, Muslims arrived in what is now known as Bolaños and took the castle. The fort was rebuilt, changing its composition, orientation, facilities and raising new defensive structures. Mainly built the Tower of Homage and two more defensive towers at the corners, which do not currently maintain.   The castle played an important role in the network communications in the Arab Peninsula. Fortification, reinforced and refurbished their new uses and occupants was a safe area, so that developed around a major Muslim settlement.   Calatrava during the Reconquest the area was an area of ​​struggle and battle, after the Christian victory of Las Navas de Tolosa (1212) is pacified and begins to repopulate. The fortress passed into the hands of King Alfonso VIII gives it to his daughter Berenguela in honor of their wedding.   Berenguela donated the castle to the Order of Calatrava in 1229, this donation was confirmed by his son King Ferdinand III and his grandson Alfonso X El Sabio. The Order of Calatrava Castle became the seat of the Commendation of Bolaños in 1537 and disappeared in 1825.   In 1864 the castle is auctioned and becomes a private building until the middle of s. XX, in which the Provincial de Ciudad Real becomes the new owner performing various restoration projects due to deterioration.   Currently Berenguela Castle is owned by the City of Bolanos de Calatrava and was declared of Cultural Interest in 1982
