Step into the MUPE and prepare to be transported back in time. With over 1,200 fossils and reconstructions on display, the museum offers a comprehensive journey through the fascinating history of life on our planet. The museum is spread across two floors, with the lower floor dedicated to paleontology in general, and the upper floor delving into the geological history of the Alicante province and its surrounding areas.

A Glimpse into the Past

As you enter the museum, you'll be greeted by a reconstruction of the cabinet of Pedro Ibarra, an archaeologist and paleontologist from the early 20th century who played a pioneering role in the field in Elche. The museum's three main halls are organized chronologically, representing the Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic periods, each showcasing the diverse flora and fauna that existed during those times.

Impressive Exhibits

The MUPE boasts an impressive collection of fossils and replicas, including exceptional specimens of trilobites, ammonites, and a mosasaur - a marine reptile. One of the highlights is the replica of Spinophorosaurus nigerensis, a new dinosaur species discovered by the MUPE's team of paleontologists. The museum also showcases original dinosaur remains from Morella, stunning mastodon fossils from Crevillent, and exceptionally preserved fish fossils, reflecting the dramatic geological events that occurred in the Mediterranean.

Unveiling the Paleontological Riches of Alicante

The upper floor of the MUPE is dedicated to the paleontological wealth of the Alicante province. Visitors can admire specimens from Elche, Crevillent, Guardamar, Aspe, as well as nearby areas such as Morella and Ribesalbes in Castellón, Las Hoyas in Cuenca, and Quibas in Murcia. These exhibits provide a deeper understanding of the region's geological history and the diverse life forms that once inhabited it.

Plan Your Visit

The MUPE is open from Tuesday to Saturday, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm and from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. On Sundays and public holidays, it opens from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. The museum is closed on Mondays. General admission is €2, while students, groups, Carnet Jove holders, seniors, and large families can enjoy a discounted rate of €1. Entry is free on Sundays and for children under 6 years old, holders of the golden card from the Elche City Council, accredited teachers and monitors, and individuals with disabilities or reduced mobility.
