The building was purchased in the mid-nineteenth century. by Giuseppe Viti merchant and alabaster producer who, with his many trips in the US, South America and in the East, did know and appreciate the stone of Volterra in the world. It was mainly thanks to his initiative that led him to India where he sold beautiful alabaster objects to a rich Indian maharajah, which could become one of the the richest and important of the city. The maharajah over to pay him the goods, gave the land of Volterra merchant precious stones and several of oriental art objects that are still kept in the halls of the palace. Upon returning from the trip to the East, and the Screws bought beautifully restored one of the most impressive buildings in the center of Volterra which is still inhabited by his descendants. In the Palace houses two of the most significant examples of art as monumental alabaster chandeliers made for Maximilian of Hapsburg Emperor of Mexico.
