The "Sanctuary of Our Lady of Carmel", better known as the Church of the Carmine, is a worship of Messina. It replaces the homonymous church, located near the Duomo and destroyed in the earthquake of 1908. It lies on the Via Porta Imperiale (now Via Antonino Martino) where there were important public and private buildings, almost completely erased by the earthquake of December 28, 1908 and the new reconstruction. In particular, these areas were the Great Civil Hospital (now the General Court and Cannizzaro-Galatti schools), the Church of Saint Lucia's Hospital (part of the parish church) and the Palace of the "Elephants" still existing part by side.

The temple attracts the typical eighteenth-century style of Messina prior to the earthquake destruction. The church, built by the Engineer Lorenzo Interdonato, the architect Cesare Bazzani (1873 - 1939), was consecrated on July 15, 1931 and dedicated to the Madonna del Carmine. The May 13, 1956, on the occasion of the Marian Year, the Archbishop, Mons. Angelo Paino elevated the church to the rank of Sanctuary.

The Sanctuary is also the Parish Church and is entitled "Santa Maria del Carmine". The parish, which is the oldest in the city, took the name 17 December 1988, whereas, previously, was named "San Lorenzo". In the registers of baptism we find even the name of Father Annibale Maria Di Francia, christened there on July 7, 1851. In 1918, the Parish passed at the behest of the Archbishop of time, Mons. Letterio D'Arrigo, the cares of the secular clergy those of religious Carmelites (present in Messina since '200) that were responsible for its management until September of 2015, date that marked their farewell to the city of the Strait.
