Teatro Nacional São João

The TNSJ is a Business Public Entity, as part of its public service mission, its main objectives are the creation and presentation of theater, of various kinds, according to standards of artistic and technical excellence, and the promotion of regular contact between public with reference works, classic and contemporary, national and universal dramatic repertoire.

Considering the theater as art par excellence of corporatization and transmission of the word, the TNSJ has the programmatic axis the defense of the Portuguese language and dramaturgy in the Portuguese language in its standard and its polymorph, including its dialectal variants. This priority through the interpreter training programs, the direction of actors and the requirement on the quality of texts, original writing or translation.

In order to attract and train new audiences, TNSJ open to the community, striving to match the demand for a special vocation to the communicability of its shows, a spirit of renewal and contemporary of stage languages ​​and plan to raise the critical requirement of public standards.

Member of the Theatre Union of Europe and festival organizer PoNTI - Porto. Christmas. Theater. International., The TNSJ aims at the internationalization of theatrical activities and the establishment of a demanding partnership with the European theatrical universe. Develops projects involving foreign collaboration, productions exchanges with similar entities in other countries and the organization or participation in international festivals.

As part of its activity, TNSJ promotes theater projects in co-production with other artistic production bodies, including those who prefer to roam in the national network of cine-theaters and contribute to cultural decentralization. It also hosts shows in its programming produced by other structures and companies that integrate the goals of their artistic project and enable the development of new values ​​and theatrical aesthetic.

The TNSJ activity also has the horizon the progressive qualification of all artistic elements and technical staff involved in its activity, as well as strengthening the ennoblement of crafts show and theatrical production and communication modes. Acquires in this context, of particular significance formative work with an almost resident cast and effort maturation of the speech representation, generating in the House a sort of informal academy that is now a reference in Portugal.
