The Romanian Anonymous Society Petrosani builds in the Colonia de Jos, in the years 1923-1925, the Workers' Casino in Petrosani. The 1250-square-meter building includes a 400-seat festive hall with a large stage for artistic and theatrical performances. On the stage of this working casino, theater groups from all the major cities of the country will go on in the interwar period. Here it will work, following the establishment decision no. 2555/23 June 1948, the Ministry of the Arts and Information, the People's Theater, the Jiu Valley Branch. A year later, in 1949, the official title of the institution changed to the State Theater "Valea Jiului" Petroşani. In May 1981 the State Theater "Valea Jiului" moved to the current headquarters (built in 1905), which over the years had various functions: casino, guest house, etc. From 1981 until 1983 the building is added a new space suitable for theatrical activities, showroom, backstage, foyer ... On May 31, 1983, the "Valea Jiului" State Theater inaugurated this "new" building, presenting the show with which it opened its first season in 1948, "A Lost Letter" by Ion L. Caragiale, directed by Ion Simionescu. It is remembered that during this period, when the building was being built, the theater prepared a series of performances in the foyer and the exhibition hall.

In 1991 the State Theater "Valea Jiului" changed its name to the Drama Theater "Ion D. Sirbu" Petrosani, as it is known today. This theater, with a rejuvenated staff, hosts and offers the public in Petrosani a continuous artistic dialogue and an unexpected joy of the spirit.
