Discover the Architectural Gem of Doksy: Kino Máj Doksy

Nestled in the charming town of Doksy, in the Česká Lípa district of the Liberec region, lies a true architectural gem - Kino Máj Doksy. Designed by Karel Hubáček, a founding member of the architectural studio SIAL, this cinema theater is a significant landmark that showcases the innovative design of the 20th century.

A Historical Journey

The history of film projection in Doksy dates back to the 1920s when the original cinema, Heller, was located in the rear part of the Bezděz restaurant on Komenského Street. However, in 1953, a fire destroyed the cinema, and temporary screening spaces were provided by the Grand Hotel. It was then decided to construct a new cinema building.

During the excavation work for the new building, the construction was halted due to the discovery of groundwater. This setback led to the involvement of architect Karel Hubáček, who, along with his collaborators, created a multipurpose building that not only housed a cinema hall and technical facilities but also featured a café on the upper floor.

Architectural Marvel

Kino Máj Doksy stands out with its unique architectural style, which has been described as reminiscent of alpine architecture or inspired by the shapes of boats and waves on the nearby Mácha Lake. The use of reinforced concrete allowed for the creation of a lightweight and airy structure, including the shell-like roof construction. This innovative design enabled the successful completion of the building on an unstable terrain with aggressive groundwater.

A Cinematic Experience

On March 9, 1963, Kino Máj Doksy opened its doors with the premiere of the Czech film "Závrať" directed by Karel Kachyňa. Equipped with state-of-the-art film technology of its time, including widescreen projection and stereophonic speakers, the cinema provided an immersive cinematic experience for its audience.

Over the years, Kino Máj Doksy has undergone renovations to maintain its original charm. However, with the changing economic landscape in the 1990s, the cinema faced challenges due to declining audiences, increased ticket prices, the rise of DVD and video rentals, and a decrease in the quality of films in distribution.

Preserving the Legacy

Thanks to the initiative of the local community, the Antonín Bennewitz Foundation established the "History and Future of Kino Máj Doksy" project. With financial support from the ČSOB and Poštovní spořitelna programs, as well as the State Fund for the Support and Development of Czech Cinematography, the cinema underwent a digitalization process to ensure its survival.

Today, Kino Máj Doksy continues to be a cultural hub in Doksy, offering a diverse range of films and events for locals and visitors alike. Whether you're a film enthusiast or an architecture lover, a visit to Kino Máj Doksy is a must to appreciate its historical significance and unique design.
