This collection began to take shape from the confiscation of 1835 and the subsequent creation in 1844 of the Commissions of Historical-Artistic Monuments. With its creation as a museum in 1867, the collections begin to grow in an ever progressive way. From its beginnings, this Museum has had several venues, to its location in the Renaissance Palace of the Páez de Castillejo. This building is the oldest civil work of the Cordovan renaissance and one of the most emblematic palaces of the old town of Cordoba. In the 50's it was restored and rehabilitated by the architect Felix Hernandez. Its current installation was inaugurated in 1962. In that same year, both this building and its collections, were declared Historic Artistic Monument. The palace, besides presenting a magnificent facade of stone with carved decoration, preserves the structure of the XVI, the main staircase, coffered ceilings, and some previous elements of century XV, Mudejar and Gothic. In the course of the seventeenth century passed to the family of Bañuelos and then to the House of Alba, who alienated him in the nineteenth century. Of the later avatars, it should be noted that it housed the first telephone center in Cordoba.

In addition, the Museum has the enlargement building adjacent to the Palace, which with a contemporary architectural language, offers modern, attractive and functional museum spaces that provide the Archaeological Museum of Cordoba with the growing spaces and services demanded by its projection in the actual society.

The exhibition opens its doors with an exhibition which, under the motto "Córdoba, Encounter of Cultures", offers visitors a themed tour of the most significant pieces of the museum's extraordinary collection. And also, presents an exceptional piece, the archaeological site of the Roman theater of the city, open to the public in its basement, restored, museum and accessible.
