Museo Pietro Canonica

Atmosphere of the century in this small but precious museum, located in the heart of Villa Borghese and dedicated to the artist Pietro Canonica (1869-1959). internationally renowned sculptor, fond of music and composer himself, canonical forms in Turin late nineteenth century, then we will stay long at the courts of Europe, where the aristocracy commissioned portraits and commemorative monuments. He moved to Rome in 1922, and in 1927 managed to get the municipal concession for the use of the building which now houses the museum to make it his home and studio. In return, the artist agrees to donate, after death, all the works gathered on that occasion over the years to become a museum in his name. From this originates the uniqueness of this museum space, which gives us the image of this artist in its entirety, human as well as professional. Several are in fact the prospects that the museum offers to the reading of the visitor: the private apartment on the first floor, with their precious furnishings and paintings of the nineteenth century Piedmontese, who tells us the intimate universe of memories and personal suffering artist; aterlier the sculptor on the ground floor, which can still be a source of inspiration and testament to the artist's technical expertise; the exhibition rooms, where you can see a big part of his work: from small busts to large equestrian statues, sculptures, sketches, models, casts, in a collection that is not only a trip to the tumultuous history from the late nineteenth century to the first half of the twentieth century, it is also an educational and informative journey through the different stages and different art processes of sculpture.
