Museum A. and B. Milasys homestead was founded in 1969. The initiators of his foundation are; the then director of Kretinga museum Juozas Mickiewicz, Kretinga ethnographer Ignas Jablonskis and the academician Adolfas Jucys from this region. By 1990 The museum belonged to the Kretinga Museum, it was its branch. Since 1990 The museum was subordinate to the Kūlupėnai eldership, in the territory of which it was active. 1996 The museum is registered in Kretinga district. in the municipality (the founder is the district municipality). The full name of the museum is the Museum of the Homeland of Bishop Motiejus Valančius. The director of the museum is Algirdas Čėsna. On 11 04 1999, the museum was registered in the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania by order No. 473. Museum code 188206780.

2009 December 17 No. T2-366 by the decision of the Kretinga District Municipal Council to amend the Regulations of the Museum, the Regulations of the Council of the Museum. The museum became an independent municipality budget institution, the founder of which is the district municipality. The institution implementing the rights and duties of the founder is the Kretinga District Municipal Council. The museum is a seal of a public legal person who has the status of a municipality museum, regulations, national and foreign currency accounts with the banks of the Republic of Lithuania. The Bishop's Motiejus Valančius Birthplace Museum is a monument to the republican significance of history, and the barn of the 19th century is a monument of folk architecture. According to the type of collections it contains, the Museum is a memorial museum.

The material presented at the exhibition of M. Valančius displays the life and various activities of the bishop, his works from 1850-1875. The exposition shows the pamphlets of M. Valančius, and there is also an arsenal of his personal belongings-cutlery, a table servitude, a sofa he used to live in Varniai, which he presented to the bookbearer Francis Straup (Strop) in 1868. The homestead is characterized by Valančius's XVIII century The barn is a monument of folk architecture.
