Built between 1848 and 1875 to defend Menorca from the British threat, La Mola Fortress is one of the best examples of 19th-century military architecture on the island. The fortress consists of 10 fronts that are divided into two groups: those for land defence and those for sea defence. The land defence is the most important, as the sea defence relied on the cliffs surrounding the La Mola peninsula. © iStock / LoPeix
