The Békéscsaba Museum Association established in 1899 can be considered as the predecessor of the Mihály Munkácsy Museum, the foundation of the collections that has been established for fifteen years, has been educated by appropriate professionals and has built up the House of Public Education, which is the venue for the museum. The building for the four-function building of the museum-library-studio-general education was inaugurated in 1914. Today, this building is home to the museum, which in 1951 received the name of Mihály Munkácsy (1844-1900).

Since 1914, the museum was operated by the Museum Association, it operated as a city museum from 1914, from 1950 it became a state administrator, from 1962 it was the center of the Békés county museum organization and from 2013 it is the county office of the Békéscsaba County Law Firm. From the 1970s it became the national base museum of Slovak and Romanian nationality in Hungary.

After the change of regime, the international relations of the museum expanded with the Arad County Museum and then the Slovak National Museum, the co-operation agreement with the Körös-rural and Capital Homes Museum in Nagyvárad, which resulted in the exchange of several exhibitions and joint research.

The museum's collection consists of natural, archaeological, ethnographic, historical, fine arts and collections. The Munkácsy Collection, consisting of paintings and relics, is a prominent piece of art of the institution, which is based on the testament of the widow of the painter to the artworks in the collection of the early 1930s.

The present image of the Mihály Munkácsy Museum, which was completed with new permanent exhibitions after the complete reconstruction with the use of European Union resources, was won in 2008.
