Built in the 14th century as a monastery church, the name of the Barfüsserkirche paid tribute to the mendicant orders of the Franciscans. Since 1894, the Barfüsserkirche, the flagship of the HMB, houses one of the oldest collections on the Upper Rhine. The treasures preserved here are still world - famous sights: the Basel Cathedral Treasure, the Basel Dance of Death or the medieval tapestries. For the epoch of the early modern period, the large Kunstkammer focuses on the private collection tradition of the city, whose actors in Basel range from Erasmus of Rotterdam to the Amerbach and Faesch families to the cultural historian Jacob Burckhardt.
