The Smidt Museum in Szombathely was founded in 1968 by dr. Lajos Smidt, a retired hospital head physician, who presented his valuable private collection to the public of Szombathely and Vas County. The result of six decades of collecting work is this oddly rich oeuvre. The renowned chief physician, with tireless passion, has collected the precious memories of the past for the future, with the aim of making it a public one.

Dr. Lajos Smidt was a physician, with a great professionalism, conscientiously healing and operating surgeon who had never taken any money from his patients. Patients, knowing the collector's passion for the doctor, brought him the old objects that had become obsolete at home as a sign of their gratitude. These multifaceted exhibits are made up of these museum treasures. Smidt's chief physician created a collection of his own power, not a family inheritance. Collective passion in the child was accompanied by the chief physician to the grave who died in 1975; Evidence of his selfless medical operation, however, remained for the posterity. The town of Szombathely is located in a beautiful old building with the 2nd Hollán Ernő utca street. in the house below the Smidt Museum, located next to the Episcopal Palace, in front of the Megyehaza. This is one of the oldest buildings in Szombathely (1773) built on the castle walls of the medieval fortress in the K-Ny direction and on one of its corner bastions. The artwork and rarities exhibited in it are worthy of the beauty of the monument building. Over 5,000 museums displaying over 5,000 artefacts have been renewed in the last two years, interactive tools, handcrafted copies of artworks, artifact specimens, and toys make the exhibition more colorful and enjoyable to all members of the family.
