Werner Berg Museum

The Werner Berg Museum was opened in 1968 under the name "Werner Berg Galerie der Stadt Bleiburg". In the heart of the small town, where innumerable sketches of the artist had been created in many markets, Werner Oev's oeuvre was to be presented in a previously unknown unity in the core area of ​​its origin. With the establishment of this monographic museum - at that time one of the first in Austria - the small town achieved a cultural-political sensation of supra-regional importance. It houses the rich collection of images of the Werner Berg Foundation and shows a representative overview of the life's work of the artist, who was born in Elberfeld (Wuppertal) in 1904. The homestead of the museum is a centuries-old building on Bleiburger Hauptplatz, which was sensitively revitalized in 1997 and now offers the ideal setting for the works of art. As part of the Europe exhibition "Power of the Word - Power of the Image", which took place in 2009, the museum was expanded by a lift, an overglazed creative workshop and a beautiful sculpture garden, which will continue to be accessible to visitors in the future

Werner Berg

Werner Berg, born in 1904 in Wuppertal-Elberfeld, moved in 1931, after completing a degree in political science and visiting the academies in Vienna and Munich with his family on the Rutarhof, a mountain farm high above the river Drau at the Annabrücke, where he remained until his death Lived in 1981 as a farmer and painter. The central theme of his artistic work are the landscape and people of the adopted home of Lower Carinthia, observed with the distance of the stranger and the intensity of the lover.   The province of Carinthia has created a unique document with his work.
