In 1953 the municipality of Visoko founded the Homeland Museum. The museum owns an adequate own building and is located in Alija Izetbegovića street no. 29, 71300 Visoko.

The museum's activities are based on the collection, processing, protection and preservation of museum material, as well as its presentation by organizing exhibitions, alone or in cooperation with other institutions. In addition to the main activities of museological disciplines, the Museum is registered for scientific and research work as well as for the protection of cultural heritage.

The homeland museum of Visoko owns its own building in the central zone of the city with available 366 m2:

  • Lapidarium in the cellar rooms
  • Depots and offices on the ground floor
  • Exhibition rooms on the floor of the building
  • Restoration and conservation workshop in the attic of the building
  • Multipurpose space in front of the building, suitable for different performance

In cooperation with the Mozaik Foundation, in 2006, the Homeland Museum built the depandance of the museum "Ethno-room / Ethno-Workshop" in Godusa near Visoko. The Depandans include a permanent exhibition of museum exhibits of ethnographic collection - abercrombie, cobbler and sculptural crafts. The exhibition was provided by the Visoko Homeland Museum, and the equipment of the ethno-workshop with the performance of the artworks on authentic craftsmanship for hand-made work is led by master Vehab Halilović.

Also, the Municipal Museum of Visoko is the owner of the only preserved tabacle in BiH. The column was placed as a permanently exposed exhibit on an adequate stand in Alija Izetbegović Street, right across the building of the Visoko Municipal Museum.

Museums / Funds and collections:

  • Phototheque - 2,600 inventory units
  • Art collection - 15 inventory units
  • Ethnographic collection - 862 inventory units
  • Numismatic collection - 428 inventory units
  • Archaeological collection of over 162,000 registered inventory units
  • Geological-palaeontological collection of 356 inventory units
  • Medieval collection - 172 inventory units
  • A collection of objects from Nob
  • Municipal archives from several periods: Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, World War II and after World War II. It contains about 30,000 inventory units
  • A professional library of over 1,500 books

The number of inventory units is not fixed because it changes from year to year on the basis of grants, redemption for collection of collections, random finds and archaeological excavations in the municipality of Visoko.

During the aggression in BiH (1992-1995), the entire museum material was moved to several locations, which led to a great degree of degradation and endangering the exhibits. Only at the end of 2000, the exhibits were returned to the Visoko Municipal Museum.

The technical conditions for the maintenance of the collections have been inadequate for many years because the facility did not possess the devices necessary for the adequate protection of museum objects (drying of moisture from the air), the basements were unsuitable for storing exhibits, and there was no adequate storage room.

In 2007, the audit and assessment of fund damages was completed. The right state was determined by collections, the primary protection and conservation of the most endangered objects was made, as well as the systematization of exhibits by collections and subscriptions from the museum fund. The Commission for the Review and Evaluation of Degree of Damage to the Funds of the Municipal Museum Visoko completed its work on 17.07.2007. year, and according to the available documentation, this was the first audit in the last 35 years. The Supervisory Board and the Steering Committee of the Visoko Municipal Museum, as well as the Municipality of Visoko, accepted the Report of the Expert Commission without any objection. A great shift in the organization and documentation of the Museum's work is to photograph a large number of museum museum collections (ethnographic collection, weapons collection, geological collection).

Based on the assessment of the Audit Commission on the condition and maintenance conditions, it has been established that only stone and metal exhibits have adequate protection. Other exhibits (textiles and paper) are not protected from further deterioration, lack of apparatus for sterilization of the exhibits, there is not enough room for the exhibit accommodation, there is no high quality lighting.

From 23.12.2013 to 26.12.2013. the event "Week of the Regional Museum - Visoko" was held, from which the Visoki Museum marks the 60th anniversary of its work on the preservation of the cultural and historical heritage of the High About the 60th year of the Regional Museum is spoken by the director Senad J. Hopdovic.
