In 998, Rodolphe, a member of the Sigiboldides family, founded a priory in Bevaix. After gaining approval from the Bishop of Lausanne, Rodolphe handed over the priory to the Cluny Order. The priory was endowed with extensive territories not only in Bevaix but also in Brot-Dessous and Chézard-Saint-Martin.

Over the centuries, the role of the priory's protector changed hands several times. Initially held by Rodolphe's direct descendants, it later passed to the lords of Colombier and Gorgier in the 13th century, and then to the Neuchâtel-Vaumarcus family in 1433. In 1139, the priory, previously affiliated with Cluny, came under the direction of the Romainmôtier Abbey due to financial difficulties.

Architectural Marvels

While the priory's church no longer exists, other buildings that have undergone numerous transformations still stand today. The priory was likely completed around the time of its approval by the Bishop of Lausanne in 998. In 1426, the residents of Bevaix were tasked with repairing the bell tower and creating a new entrance in the priory's church. In 1453, the interior of the church was whitewashed.

After the Reformation, a document from 1561 mentions the priory building itself, as well as cellars, two barns, a stable, and a wine press. In the following years, various renovations and restorations took place, including the replacement of the decaying eight-sided roof with a two-sided roof in 1569. The cloister was restored in 1577, and in 1582, the church's bell tower was demolished and rebuilt under the orders of the count, who also renovated the priory house and the wine press.
