Požega town has always been a very important cultural center. The first public performances were performed at the beginning of the 18th century (the first recorded Jesuit performance was played in 1715). At the end of the 19th century, Volunteer Theater Society was founded, so that the entire Požega period as Slavonian Athens is manifested by numerous domestic performances, operas of the "Vijenac" singing society and the performances of traveling theaters from all over Europe.

Immediately after II. World War II Požega gets its first professional theater, which, unfortunately, went off in 1957. From that period to the worse conditions, until 1995, when the Pozega City Theater was founded, theatrical life survives thanks to the visiting theaters and sporadic performances of the domestic amateur theater.

Požega City Theater was founded by the decision of the Požega City Council at the end of December 1994 and was officially opened on March 10, 1995 with the performance of Zvonimir Bajšić "Seeing the day begins beautiful" directed by Ivica Plovanić.
