Kunstmuseum Thurgau / Ittinger Museum

The Ittinger Museum and the Thurgau Art Museum are located in the Charterhouse Ittingen, an idyllic former monastery near Frauenfeld. The history of the place represents the Ittinger Museum. There lived monastic communities for centuries, from the middle of the 15th century the Carthusians. Even today, the monks' cells and the magnificent rococo church present themselves as if the monks still lived and prayed in Ittingen. Anyone who walks through cloisters and workspaces will gain insights into their own world. The Kunstmuseum Thurgau, with its small but top-class collection as well as attractive temporary exhibitions, sets a highly up-to-date antithesis to the past-idyll of the historical rooms. Here you can discover works of art from top international positions such as Joseph Kosuth, Roman Signer or Janet Cardiff. Another focus of the collection and exhibition activity is the geek art. Selected works by Naive and Art Brut artists are grouped around the estate of the Thurgau Naive Adolf Dietrich. In 1977, the Charterhouse Ittingen was bought by a private foundation founded by private law, restored and with the support of partners a new use. A stylish restaurant with a beautiful garden, the monastery shop with home-grown products and atmospheric gardens invite you to linger and enjoy. Visitors can walk the path to the center in the freely accessible labyrinth of hundreds of thyme plants or meditate in the space of silence, pause and draw strength from the silence.
