A Journey through Time

Before a Napoleonic decree mandated the relocation of cemeteries outside city limits, the local deceased were buried within the church of Ferentillo, located in the area known as Precetto. From the 16th century onwards, the bodies of the deceased were interred in the Romanesque crypt upon which the 16th-century church of Santo Stefano was built. This church stands at the foot of Mount S. Angelo, along the small road leading to the ancient pentagonal fortress of the Precetto village.

In 1871, the Capuchin friars, responsible for the crypt, decided to exhume the buried bodies. To their astonishment, they discovered that the bodies had been remarkably well-preserved, often still clothed and with intact skin, hair, beards, and teeth. Initially, a large number of well-preserved bodies were found, but due to initial disinterest, changing climatic conditions, and inadequate preservation efforts, the number has since reduced to approximately 25.

Unraveling the Mystery

In 1887, the prestigious Accademia dei Lincei published a detailed study on the curious phenomenon of body mummification, conducted by scholars Carlo Maggiorani and Dr. Aliprando Moriggia, along with chemist Vincenzo Latini. They concluded that the mummification was attributed to the composition of the soil, rich in iron silicates, alumina, calcium sulfate and nitrates, magnesium, and ammonia. The ventilation within the crypt and the presence of microorganisms on the mummies' skin, which fed on decomposable matter, contributed to the rapid desiccation process.
