The artisan houses in the Kühnertsgasse - a peep into history

The three late medieval houses in the Kühnertsgasse represent a unique time capsule of Nuremberg history. Created from 1377 and repeatedly redesigned in the course of time, they have survived the centuries largely unscathed and remained as the only representative of their kind in this corner of the old town of the destruction of Spared World War II.

The oldest part is hidden in No. 22, where in the originally two-storey half-timbered house of 1377 remains of a set wooden box in block construction have received. In 1434 the two adjoining houses no. 20 and 18 were built as two-storey half-timbered buildings. After that, in the houses, repeated alterations took place over the centuries.

The sources give a vivid impression of who lived and worked in it. For the No. 18, the craft use is particularly well documented. At the time of its construction, a redsmith worked here, followed by blacksmith. Circle and blade forging. In No. 20, however, all older findings are disturbed by later conversions, but here too blacksmiths are detectable.

The same applies to No. 22, where conversions destroyed older tracks. However, written sources report z. For example, from the nailer Georg Heess, who bought the house in 1639, but had to sell because of high debts in 1657. So it is not surprising that he spent his old age in Mendel's Zwölfbrüderhaus and thus a portrait of him is preserved.

The three craftsmen's houses were listed as a historical monument in 1974, but without anyone having accepted them. It was not until 2002 that the old town friends dared to take over the Herculean task of restoration thanks to the promised grants. In agreement with the monument authorities and the Natural History Society, a utilization concept was developed with the aim of presenting the life and work of artisans from the late Middle Ages to the early modern period in a living museum "to touch".

After the preliminary work such. B. Archaeological excavations 2005 could finally be started with the renovation. All work was carried out in traditional craftsmanship, with much emphasis placed on making the historic architecture legible. Mention deserves here, the good cooperation with the Fränkische Freilandmuseum.
