The Museum in Smederevo was founded by the decision of the City People's Committee of Smederevo on April 12, 1950. The first name that the Smederevo Museum brought was the National Museum.

By the decision of the Assembly of the Municipality of Smederevo from 1972, the Museum in Smederevo gets its present name, as well as the new building in Omladinska Street no. 4, within which today there are official rooms and a permanent museum setting. The main activity of the Museum in Smederevo, in addition to museum work in the field of collecting, studying, professional and scientific processing, protection and presentation of objects of cultural, historical and museological importance in the territory of Smederevo, includes cultural, activity. In addition to the permanent exhibition of selected museum exhibits, numerous thematic exhibitions, as well as various promotions and lectures can be monitored at the Museum of Modern Art and Gallery of Contemporary Art. Since 2006, the Museum in Smederevo has been publishing an expert periodical, the Smederevski zbornik.

The most representative exhibits are exhibited thematically-chronologically in the permanent exhibition of the Museum in three shops and the lapidarium (part of the Open-Air Museum), so that the history of Smederevo and the Smederevo region can be traced back to prehistory, through antiquity, the Middle Ages and the time of Despotovina. modern times.
