The only dramatic theater in Gdynia has changed its formula and its name over the course of its fifty-year history.

On October 24, 1959, the opening performance of our theater, known as the Coastal Theater Tour, premiered on "The Maidens Wedding" directed by Maria Chodecka, with Marian Kołodziej's stage design. A few days later, the band, not having their own stage and even the rehearsal room, began to play in the theater with their first play, playing in the theaters, remedies, cultural houses and community centers of the entire Coast. The educational role was attributed to the ensemble of the theater, under the direction of Valerian Lachnitt.

In 1964, the theater changed its name to Gdańsk Land Theater, based in Gdynia, taking over the acting and artistic direction of the Coast Theater Theater, which was formed five years earlier.

In 1974 it was transformed into Dramatic Theater, which in 1980 got its first permanent stage at ul. Bema, inherited from the Musical Theater.

In 1991, it changed its name to City Theater. The fulfillment of this multi-year transformation process was the acceptance of Witold Gombrowicz's patronage in 2000.

For our audience, besides many of the prime ministers, we also have a rich artistic offer, which makes Gdynia a center of contemporary drama for a few days. This is the Festival of Polish Contemporary Art R @ Port, which aims to gather and present to the public all the phenomena taking place in the area of the latest Polish dramaturgy. During the Festival we present to the audience of the Tri-City the best performances from all over Poland with the participation of acting stars prepared by outstanding performers. Numerous actors, directors, critics and foreign guests take part in meetings with the public, discuss the condition of the theater, but also present it "behind the scenes" by preparing, for example, reading live dramas.

With R @ Port is strictly connected with the national competition for the Gdynia Drama Award. GND was established in 2007 by the Mayor of Gdynia, Wojciech Szczurek. The winner of the three-stage competition receives a statuette and PLN 50 thousand. Contests can only be submitted in Polish by the author. GND is a natural extension of the R @ Port idea, with which it shares the same goal: to inspire and promote new phenomena within the drama. One of the aims of this project is to launch the process of improving the nominations to the finale by preparing the readings and stage sketches, which are to designate the authors the direction of further work on the piece.

Teatr im. Witold Gombrowicz is a living place, artistically fermented, with a rich repertoire offering directed at the spectators seeking both the intellectual and aesthetic excitement in the theater, as well as the moment of breathing from the tiring reality. In 1996, on the beach near the pier in Orłowo, the Summer Stage of the Municipal Theater in Gdynia was opened by Mr Gombrowicz. It is the only theater in Poland where the audience in the open air, on the sand and with the accompaniment of the sound of the sea waves watch prepared performances. On the Summer Stage there are also cabaret evenings, recitals of songs and other outdoor events.
