The Prospect of Whitby dates back to 1520 and the days of Henry VIII. Originally called "The Pelican" it was better known the Devil's Tavern, reflecting the clientele of the day - smugglers, thieves, pirates and the like. After a fire in the 1700's the pub was rebuilt in 1770 and named "Prospect of Whitby" after a ship that used to moor outside. The pub today retains it's historic character with numerous pictures showing the pub and the area over the last few centuries. The pub's reaturant was popular in the 1950's/60's with such famous stars as Frank Sinatra, Paul Newman, Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor and even royals including Princess Margaret, Lord Snowdon, Prince Ranier of Monaco and Grace Kelly. A warm welcome awaits locals and visitors from across London, the UK and the world with a wide range of Britiish cask ales, lagers, ciders, international wines and spirits. We serve great quality traditional pub fayre all day, every day and we're always willing to adapt dishes to personal taste. We also have rooms available for private hire or private dining. Come visit to experience a traditional and atmospheric London pub with fantastic views over the River Thames.
