Vietnam’s last frontier: motorbiking through Ha Giang Province

Nestled in the remote northeastern corner of Vietnam lies a hidden gem that beckons adventurous souls and wanderlust-driven travellers. It’s often overlooked - or more like, unheard of, as even after a year of living in this country, and multiple trips across the different regions, finally I’ve managed to explore this far reach corner. The Ha Giang Loop, a mesmerizing network of winding roads and terraced landscapes, offers an unforgettable journey through the rugged beauty of Vietnam's highlands. My partner and I were absolutely captivated by the ethereal charm of this region as we embarked on a thrilling motorbike adventure through the Ha Giang province. Curious? First thing first - the Ha Giang Province of Vietnam (where the Ha Giang Loop is) remains relatively untouched by mass tourism and commercialism. Its isolation has preserved its natural grandeur, with dramatic landscapes, towering limestone karsts, lush terraced rice fields, and winding mountain roads that are a dream for adventure seekers and photographers alike. The region is home to various ethnic minority groups, including the Hmong, Dao, Tay, and more. 

I am Vietnamese-Canadian-Dutch (yep, that’s a mouthful but great when it comes to a trifecta of passports) but when I’m here, I feel like I’ve seen so many other Vietnamese people whose beauty is so unique, from the glint of their eyes to their skin, that it amazes me how actually diverse our country is. As I travel through the loop, it provides a unique opportunity to immerse myself in the rich and diverse cultures of these communities. I can easily get off my motorbike and visit their villages, interact with locals, and learn about their traditions, clothing, and way of life - that is vastly special to them compared to the way of life down in Saigon (where I call home during European winters).  You can also stay in traditional homestays, dine on delicious local cuisine while witnessing the daily life in remote villages, and really experience authentic rural life. These interactions provide a deep and meaningful connection with the region and its people. While it’s easy to drive fast on the Ha Giang Loop, it also gives you the chance to live slow - a contrast in the journey that strikes a grounding experience. 

That’s the Ha Giang Province. The Ha Giang Loop itself is a long stretch of road that is woven through the province, where you can do a road trip through to experience this last frontier of Vietnam. Since this is a country where the preferred way of transportation is by motorbike - you gotta do it like how the Vietnamese do it! And oh boy, does the Ha Giang Loop ever offer some of the most exhilarating motorbike riding experiences in ALL of Southeast Asia. The winding, mountainous roads, with countless hairpin turns, provide a thrilling challenge for riders. It's a paradise for motorbike enthusiasts looking for an adrenaline rush and breathtaking scenery. For those like me who aren’t so well acquainted with a motorbike (hey… back in the Netherlands I only go around by a non-motorized bicycle), let me tell you that this will get you to expert level in no time. 

Every twist and turn on the Ha Giang loop reveals a new and jaw-dropping vista. The Ma Pi Leng Pass, in particular, is renowned for its unparalleled panoramic views of the Nho Que River, winding through deep valleys and sheer limestone cliffs towering above. The landscape's rugged and dramatic beauty is a constant companion throughout the journey - one that you truly will not experience in any other part of the world.

Due to its remote location and challenging terrain, the Ha Giang Loop remains off the beaten path. This means fewer tourists, allowing you to enjoy the natural beauty and cultural experiences without the crowds often found in more popular destinations. While Vietnam is still an emerging country in tourism compared to other South East Asian hotspots like Thailand and Indonesia, this corner of the country will feel like a time before globalism ushered in the age of hyper travel that we have now. 

Travelling the Ha Giang Loop still evokes a strong sense of adventure and exploration. The journey is not only about the destination, as there’s no point in getting to Point B without enjoying the stops between Point A, but also about the thrill of conquering challenging roads, discovering hidden gems, and immersing yourself in a world few have had the opportunity to explore.
