Belfries are civic tower structures enclosing bells, present in Continental Europe, usually attached to a city hall. Built between the XIth and XVIIth centuries, they were initially watchtowers used to prevent cities against hostile incursions. Today, more than 56 of them are on the UNESCO world heritage list, as "highly significant tokens of winning civil liberties".
