BRAHMS LIVES!

In Mürzzuschlag in the beautiful Styria, where with a great deal of imagination you have created the lovingly designed Brahms Museum - by the way the only one of its kind in the world.

"Johannes Brahms auf Sommerfrische" is the theme of the museum's eventful permanent exhibition in the composer's residence during the summer months of 1884 and 1885. Brahms lived in Mürzzuschlag for more than nine months and composed entirely his IV Symphony in E minor and more than 30 songs and choral works. "It's all too nice here ..." Brahms lured many of his Viennese friends (Theodor Billroth, Eduard Hanslick, Robert Fuchs u.v.a.) to visit Mürzzuschlag. The poet Peter Rosegger, who created in Krieglach, also visited Brahms on foot from Mürzzuschlag!

On the musical walk through the sounding museum you will discover the world of the Brahms composing summer in Austria (Pörtschach, Ischl, Preßbaum, Mürzzuschlag), Switzerland and Germany. Brahms's greatest works were written during the summer months. Browse through Brahms manuscripts and listen to the everlasting melodies. Listening and seeing form a unique experience. But they also get to know and love the people of Brahms. A large number of items and photos from Brahms's possession (loans from the Vienna Museum and the Archive of the Society of Music Friends in Vienna), as well as unknown diaries and letters, paint a vivid picture of the master. But they also meet the circle of friends of Brahms: Clara Schumann, Joseph Joachim, Marie Soldat, Adele and Johann Strauss, Theodor Billroth, Elisabeth von Herzogenberg, the Fellinger family and others.

The music salon of the Brahms Museum crowns your visit to the museum: the restored, original strings-wing, on which Brahms recorded his only sound recording on wax cylinders in 1889 (!) can be seen and heard here. Here Brahms himself plays one of his Hungarian dances! In the music salon with its magnificent stucco ceiling from 1720 also the year-round museum concerts with first-rate interpreters take place.

For its unusual design the Brahms Museum 1994 received the European Museum Award "MUSEUM OF THE YEAR - SELECTED CANDIDATE".

The museum is basically visitable without guidance, foreign-language visitors are offered translations in many languages. Special programs for groups, children and students complete the museum experience perfectly. We look forward to welcoming you soon in the Brahms Museum Mürzzuschlag.
