Forte Montecchio Nord, realized in a few months between 1912 and 1914, behind the First World War, is one of the great fortifications which condition the defensive system complex of the Northern Border to Switzerland. This was conceived and carried out by protecting the Kingdom of Italy of any possible attack in force through the Swiss Confederation from Germany or Austria-Hungary.


The system concentrates its facilities at the major access roads to the Po Valley: the Great St. Bernard, Simplon, Gotthard, Spluga, Maloja and Bernina, Stelvio and the Tonale-line Aprica, leaders already all have, at the beginning of '900, of major roads and railways.


Forte Montecchio Nord is strategically located at the convergence of five of these lines, the control of which was aimed at preventing the outlet to Milan. The ordinary opening hours are from Easter to November 4 and concern every Saturday, Sunday and public holiday (April 25, May 1, June 2, August 15, November 4) .The fort is open in these days from 10 to 18 with guided tours leaving every hour (10,11,12,13 ...). Last visit 18 hours. Special opening hours for July: two afternoon visits to a 14 and a 16. Openings at Agostini every day from 10 to 18 continued (one every hour). Every Friday night in July and August two visits to a 21 and a 22 to (recommended but not required a flashlight).
