Grusomhetens Teater

Theater of Cruelty produced its first performance in collaboration with Trøndelag Theater in 1989, and was established as a separate group in 1992.

Since then it has produced 23 performances.

Since 2002 we have had our own stage in Hausmannsgt 34 ​​in Oslo. Det var etableret med støtte fra Norsk Kunstråd.

The company has performed at festivals and stages in Germany, Poland, England, Sweden, India and France. The company has in these places, in addition to Ireland and New York, also held workshops.

Theatre of Cruelty makes performances within physical traditions and retrieves basic inspiration from Antonin Artaud's vision of an anatomical theater.

We create theater with the body's own musicality, its breath and poetry, as the beginning of all action. Artaud wanted to awake the inherent life force that exists in nature and that the western man seems to have forgotten. Thus, theater becomes a tool usable for real life. We do not seek to reproduce realistic reality, so that it can be recognized, but to tell of the core of life inherent in every genuine experience. Since 2002 we have had our own scene in Hausmannsgt 34, which was established with the support of the Norwegian Culture Council.

The Theater of Cruelty prepares performances within the physical traditions and acquires basic inspiration from Antonin Artaud's visions for an anatomical theater. We create theater with the body's own musicality, its breath and poetry, as the beginning of all action. Artaud wanted to awaken the inherent vitality that exists in nature and which Western man seems to have forgotten. The theater thus becomes a tool for playing life. We do not seek to render realistic reality so it can be recognized, but to report on the core of life that lies in any genuine experience. Even though it is based on a dramatic work or literary text, the word is not considered to be the central one and often disappears in the overall scene.

In 2010, the Ibsen International Scholarship Award received the theater.
