Soon after the old Municipal Riding School was occupied for the second time in the autumn of 1987, when great discussions about our political attitudes took place at plenary sessions, and our ideas about culture were discussed, there was no dissuading from the idea, ours for openness, closeness and solidarity to pass on the basic understanding of culture by means of films to a culture-impoverished audience. The result was a drawing room from a former horse stable, an unusual cinema, with a bar as a meeting place, quasi suspended from the projection booth. Since March 1988, such films are thrown on Thursday and Friday evenings on the obliquely mounted in the room, every year freshly rewrought Stiroporleinwand whose content and formal characteristics are very different from the commercial monotony of urban cinemas. We want to make another movie: bring the political and the politicizing film on the screen. To make cinema different is to have stories told by people who have something to do with us, who show in what social relationships and entanglements they are trapped and how they deal with them. Stories with contradictions that can not easily be wiped on the page. Making other films also means getting involved in experimental film forms, surrendering, being unsettled by the new, the oblique, the unfamiliar. We are looking for films that are not to be seen in commercial cinemas or those that are only to be discovered at festivals. These are economically uninteresting works because they can not repeat the same stereotypes and can not compete with the films from the countries with a big cinema production or because they formally "break" the viewing habits. Such films today hardly find a Swiss distributor. One of the important tasks of the other cinema is to make attentive and curious about such "unvaluable" films. We are confronting the monotony of television and the growing disregard for cinematic culture by commercial cinemas for our cinema, where politics and culture meet as well as people: this allows a view of the world that is not one-dimensional but names social contradictions , Not the dependency through stereotypical entertainment, but the deliberate confrontation - also with one's own viewing habits - correspond to our cultural understanding.
