Welcome to the "L'Arturo" Bed & Breakfast in Matera, the city of the Rioni Sassi, Unesco World Heritage, and European Capital of Culture designated for 2019.
The B & B L'Arturo, is derived from our home, located in Via Tre Corone at number 9 and 10: it is a large house built in 1500 and enlarged in the eighteenth century, after which it housed an old school of the city. The house is distributed along terraces and stairways, towers and courtyards, in a lively architectural movement that many have remembered the famous Escher scale (the artist, however, lived in the 1900s); the progressive rearrangements that took place over the centuries testify, more simply, to a continuous adaptation of the structure to the varied needs first familiar, then functional of the owners of each period.
The Via delle Tre Corone runs along the Sasso Barisano district, parallel to the Via Duomo that leads to the Cathedral of Apulian Romanesque style, and owes its name to the duty due to enter the Civita. The location of the B & B is at the center of the history of Matera: in fact, it is one of the few access points to the two stone districts, Barisano and Caveoso, to the Cathedral Basilica with the Civita and to the Historic Center (with the Ridola streets, del Corso, San Biagio and Piazza Vittorio Veneto, which on the plain encircle the two ancient districts of the Sassi).
A few meters from "L'Arturo" is Piazza del Sedile, one of the most beautiful meeting places of the city, pervaded by a discreet background music that attests the presence of the nearby Conservatory "E.R. Duni ". On Piazza Sedile there is also the food and wine "L'Arturo", which is conducted by our family.
